One of the most impressive climbing species that you can easily plant in your garden, always surprising with its aesthetic appeal, even in winter! Ivy is a common climbing and trailing plant originating from Europe and Western Asia. It has long, flexible stems that allow it to creep and climb easily over large surfaces. It can cover a wall or be successfully used to decorate the garden, fence, or interior of the house.

 

In late summer, it produces small yellow-green flowers and fruits, though these are not edible. It is easy to plant in all seasons (except when the ground is frozen). It grows slower in its early years but once mature, it spreads rapidly, covering entire buildings. Ivy requires no special care and is quite resistant to various environmental conditions, diseases or pests. It likes sunlight but prefers not to be exposed to direct light. When planted directly in the ground, it will survive through winter.

Strelitzia Nicolai

“Life is better with Strelitzia” – that’s how any title for this plant queen should begin. Strelitzia is a stunning display of large tropical leaves that can reach up to seven metres in the wilds of southern Africa – not indoors, of course. Its spectacular flowers look very much like birds in flight with their wings outstretched.

 

Do you know who Strelitzia’s cousin is? That’s right, the banana tree. It’s just less fussy and easier to grow indoors. They are often mistaken for each other because of their seemingly similar leaves. To grow lush, it needs a very well-lit spot away from the cold. It’s also very important not to pot it. Otherwise, it’s on its own.

 

Fun fact: The Bird of Paradise is so revered in South Africa that its flower is engraved as a symbol on the 50-cent coin.

This plant is super chill when it comes to light. It will tolerate down to low light levels but prefers medium light. Direct sunlight is best avoided so you don’t risk burning those leaves. It prefers a temperature range of about 18 to 30 degrees but can tolerate cooler in winter if the rest of its conditions are all good. They enjoy higher humidity but it’s not a must. If you live in a drier area,  you might like to add a pebble tray underneath, regularly mist those giant leaves, or get a humidifier.
